Computer Geek Wanted Badly,

Posted by Dim Bulb on June 12, 2007

free of charge, of course.

Every so often my computer seizes up and stops responding, and a few seconds later my browser disappears off the screen.  As a result of this, I am forced to turn of the computer.  Needless to say, this sometimes causes me to lose work; sometimes several hours of it.  When I turn the computer back on Microsoft sends me a message:  “The driver for the display device was unable to complete the drawing operation…the display driver for MOBILITY RADEON 9000 seems to be responsible for the system instability.”  They then assure me they are working on the problem; yet it is a problem I’ve had for nearly a year.  Can I dump MOBILITY RADEON for some other display driver?  How?  Which one?

Please do not respond with a lot of computer “geek speak.”  If you respond with “geek speak” I will find you and beat you with your own pocket protector ;)

Joking aside, can anyone help?

Isn’t there some way to “restore” your hard drive (without losing all your data?). Don’t computers come with a disk that is used to restore the whole hard drive for situations like this?

  2. Hello.

I saw your post over at Puff’s about the “Barth” quiz? Well I did that quiz and the results disturbed me. 100% Anselm, 100% Augustine, 100% Barth and so on.

YOu are smart enough to do a REAL Catholic quiz with enough questions to sort everyone out.

Do you think you might put one together using Quiz Farm as the template?

    Thanks.

Your problem: I know this has occured to you, but if you are still under warranty and you know their techs are good…make the call. I have a similar problem but with the sound card causing issues.

You might want to put everything you want onto a flash drive, and / or burn everything onto disc then reformat your hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch. It sounds like a hardare problem, that is my problem and it then causes software issues.

However, you might be able to do a partial restore, but only a techie could tell you that.

Whatever you do do NOT go playing in the registry.

Sorry, that is all I can offer.

  3. SPVB,

Thanks for the comp advice. I know the display driver causing the problem can be deleted; I just don’t know what to replace it with. I’m told that this particular problem problem with this display driver effects people using Mozilla, some kind of intermittent problem, so I think I’ll start going with internet explorer and see if that clears up the device problem.

You give me far, far, too much credit concerning the ability to construct a Catholic quiz like :”which Catholic Theologian are You?” Only someone with a broad knowledge of Catholic theologians and theological history could do that. Besides the comment I left on Puff’s site was merely me parroting an observation my sister made.

  4. DimBulb,

Did you just credit your sister, and suggest she is intelligent? You — the leader the of the “International Order of the Little Brothers.”

Would such accreditation not violate the “by-laws which clearly state that no aid and comfort can be given to the enemy (hereafter referred to as the evil sisterhood).”

You clearly suggest and imply, by your parrotting her observation, that your elder sister has intelligence and insight worthy of being repeating by you. Such actions clearly provide comfort and pleasant feelings. (After all it is nice to be told one is intelligent.)

“Of course, mitigating circumstances do apply. Was said aid and comfort a ruse to borrow money? Or to bum a ride to the mall? If done for either one of these two reasons then penalties do not apply, inasmuch as money lending and ride giving are the only two useful services older sisters can render to members of the Little Brotherhood.”

If there are no mitigating circumstances then, I suggest that I be allowed to rejoin the ‘Little Brotherhood’.

Further, You know perfectly well, that you and your sister could divise a Catholic Theologian Test, and you should try.

Apple just started allowing downloads of its new browser, Safari 3 for Windows. It has most of the features of FireFox.

You can give it a try.

  6. Bear,

I can’t believe that you remember that comment I made in your combox. ‘fess up, your wife reminded you, didn’t she?

My remarks caused me to be put (unjustly!!!) on probation by the Little Brotherhood for three months. I’ve called for an arbitration hearing.

  7. Keith,

Thanks for the advice. I’ll try that.

  8. I most certainly did not remind him.
